Entertainer Tony Barton

Entertainer Tony Barton

I got contacted a few weeks ago to shoot Tony Barton, a singer and entertainer, and friend of a model that I’ve shot before.  I was helping with a workshop, so we arranged a time and place to meet up and do some shooting for a promo poster for a show he is doing in Vancouver in March.  The main area of the studio was taken up with a photography class, so we (myself, fellow photographers Brian and Jeff, as well as Tony and his beautiful wife) were restricted to the opening foyer.

I wish I had a picture of this.  It was the oddest area I’ve used as a studio so far.  It is a trapezoid shaped room measuring about 3 feet by 7 feet and was slightly wider at one end than the other.  The shorter end was a door, disguised (or at least mimicking) a bookshelf led into the main area, while the wider end was the door.  Inside there were a couple of chairs, coat racks, and various bits.  Now in addition to all this there were also 5 people, camera gear, and props.  Tony brought a microphone, cord, and a few other bits to play around with.

These shots were taken with a single flash in a strip box, pointed at Tony from Camera left.  Just enough to splash a bit of light on the wall behind him (and at this angle it created some great texture.

Below is the hero shot that we went with as the final for (hopefully) the final poster.

Tony’s a great guy, and I had a blast shooting him.  His vibe is “bad boy version of Michael Bublé“, and I encourage you to check out his music.  He’ll be doing a free show on March 14th at the Edgewater Casino, so there’s a great opportunity to come out and check him out.  Follow him on Facebook or Twitter to keep track of what he’s up to.

Thanks to Jeff, here’s a behind the scenes action shot:
